Dendrobium bellatulum is a miniature epiphytic orchid native to the eastern Himalayas and northern Indochina, including regions of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. It thrives at elevations ranging from 700 to 2,100 meters in bright, deciduous forests.
Features:
-
Size & Growth Habit: This compact orchid typically grows to a height of 5–10 cm. It features short, spindle-shaped pseudobulbs (2.5–8 cm long) and 2–4 leathery leaves that are initially covered with fine black hairs.
-
Flowers: The plant produces 1–3 fragrant, long-lasting flowers per inflorescence. Each flower measures 3.8–4.6 cm in diameter and displays creamy-white sepals and petals with green veins. The lip is trilobed, with bright red lateral lobes and a golden-yellow or orange central lobe.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. A location less than 3 feet from a south-facing window is ideal.
-
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18°C and 30°C (65°F to 86°F).
-
Humidity: Maintain humidity levels between 50% and 70%.
-
Watering: Water every 1–2 weeks, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the winter rest period.
-
Fertilization: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
-
Mounting: Best grown mounted on smooth hardwood or cork bark to ensure good air circulation and rapid drying between waterings.
