Dendrobium delacourii is a captivating miniature orchid species native to Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. This epiphytic orchid thrives in the deciduous forests of these regions, typically at elevations ranging from 200 to 1,300 meters.

Features:

  • Growth Habit: Dendrobium delacourii is a compact epiphyte characterized by clustered, spindle-shaped pseudobulbs measuring 5 to 40 cm in length. These pseudobulbs are adorned with oblong, deciduous leaves that are pale green and glossy.

  • Flowers: The orchid produces 10 to 20 fleshy flowers on an erect raceme, emerging from the apex of newly developing pseudobulbs. Each flower measures approximately 1.6 to 2 cm in diameter. The sepals are ovate and greenish-white, while the lip is yellow with red and purple striations and a fringed margin. The flowers emit a mild fragrance.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide medium to bright indirect light. In its native habitat, Dendrobium delacourii often grows in full sun, so it can tolerate direct sunlight, especially in winter.

  • Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 25°C (64°F to 77°F).

  • Humidity: High humidity levels, ranging from 60% to 80%, are essential for healthy growth.

  • Watering: Water the plant regularly during the growing season (spring to early fall), allowing the roots to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when the plant enters a rest period and drops its leaves.

  • Fertilization: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half strength during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing during the winter rest period.

  • Mounting: Dendrobium delacourii can be grown mounted on smooth hardwood or cork bark. Ensure good air circulation and avoid moisture-retaining materials at the roots.
