Dendrobium fytchianum is native to Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Malaysia, where it typically grows as an epiphyte on exposed tree branches overlooking rivers, at elevations of approximately 46–610 meters above sea level.

Features:

  • Growth Habit: A medium-sized, hot-to-warm growing epiphyte with slender, erect, cylindrical stems that branch repeatedly. New growths bear many deciduous, lanceolate leaves.

  • Flowering: Blooms in spring and summer, delivering an arching cap of 5 to 15 snow-white flowers on a terminal inflorescence about 20 cm (8″) long. Often, the lateral lobes of the lip curl inward displaying rosy-pink coloration, while the heart-shaped mid-lobe remains white and is lightly bearded with silky yellow hairs.

  • Flower Size: Each flower measures approximately 3–5 cm (1.2–2 inches) across.

  • Cultural Significance: Historically popular in Burmese culture—worn in hair and highly cherished. Sadly, extensive overharvesting has made it increasingly rare in the wild.

Care Tips:

  • Light
While natural habitats receive full sun, cultivated plants thrive in bright, indirect light, avoiding harsh direct sun that may scorch foliage.

  • Temperature

    • Growing Season (Summer): Daytime temps of 30–32 °C (86–90 °F), nights around 22 °C (72 °F), creating a daily temperature difference of 8–9 °C.

    • Winter Months: Days around 28–31 °C, nighttime dipping to 11–13 °C (52–55 °F) for a 15–18 °C variation.

  • Humidity & Ventilation

    • Summer–Autumn: High humidity—80–85%—is ideal.

    • Other Seasons: Moderately humid state of 60–70% works well. Inadequate humidity can result in inhibited growth or yellowing leaves.

    • Good airflow is also essential to avoid fungal issues—especially important when humidity is high.

  • Watering & Rest Period

    • Growing Season: Water thoroughly and frequently until autumn.

    • Winter Rest: Withhold most watering—allow medium to dry between waterings, but offer a deep soak approximately once every 4–6 weeks. Keep humidity via misting to support the resting pseudobulbs.

  • Medium & Repotting

    • Prefers staghorn peat mix with crocks and charcoal at the bottom for drainage.

    • Use the smallest pot necessary—overpotting slows growth.

    • Repotting is best done immediately after flowering, when new roots and growth begin to emerge.

  • Fertilization

    • Use 1/4 to 1/2 strength orchid fertilizer weekly.

    • During spring to mid-summer, a higher nitrogen blend is recommended; switch to a high-phosphorus formula in autumn to support flower development.

    • Reduce or cease feeding during dormancy, resuming with new growth.
