Dendrobium hekouense is a captivating miniature orchid species native to the subtropical highlands of Yunnan, China, and northern Vietnam. First described in 2011, it thrives in cool, humid environments at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 meters above sea level, making it well-suited for terrariums.
Features:
-
Size: Miniature; typically grows to about 4–10 cm in height.
-
Leaves: Deciduous; foliage often drops during the flowering period.
-
Flowers: Single, showy blooms measuring approximately 1–2.5 cm across. The flowers are white with purple veining and a dark, bowl-like throat.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight may scorch its leaves.
-
Temperature: Thrives in cool to intermediate temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 30°C (65°F to 86°F).
-
Humidity: Maintains well in humidity levels ranging from 50% to 70%.
-
Watering: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Typically, this means watering every 1–2 weeks, depending on environmental conditions.
-
Soil: Utilize a well-draining orchid mix, ideally composed of bark and perlite, to ensure proper aeration and moisture retention.
-
Rest Period: A brief rest period is beneficial post-blooming to encourage new growth.
