Dendrobium lawiense is a medium-sized epiphytic orchid native to northern Sarawak, Borneo, thriving in cool, montane environments at elevations of around 1,300 meters in lower montane mossy ridge forests.
Features:
-
Native Region: Northern Sarawak, Borneo
-
Elevation: Approximately 1,300 meters above sea level
-
Habitat: Lower montane mossy ridge forests
-
Growth Form: Cool-growing epiphyte with slender, wiry stems that become pendent with age. The stems are swollen at the base and apex and are capable of producing keikis (young plants).
- Inflorescence: Short, fasciculate, and alternately arranged from the nodes towards the apex of the leafless part of the younger leafy stem.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
-
Temperature: Cool temperatures, ideally between 60–70°F (15–21°C).
-
Humidity: High humidity levels, around 60–80%, are beneficial.
-
Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the dormant period.
-
Potting Medium: Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as bark or sphagnum moss, to mimic its natural epiphytic environment.
-
Fertilization: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer during the growing season, following the manufacturer's instructions.
