Dendrobium leucocyanum is a miniature orchid species native to the high-altitude montane forests of northern Papua New Guinea. It thrives at elevations between 2,130 and 2,590 meters, where it grows as a cold-loving, mat-forming epiphyte.
Features:
-
Habitat: Wet montane forests at elevations of 2,130–2,590 meters
-
Growth Habit: Miniature, creeping, mat-forming epiphyte
-
Pseudobulbs: Spherical to ovoid, ribbed, and wrinkled; reddish-brown with age
-
Leaves: 2–3 leathery, ovate-elliptic, purple-tinged beneath
-
Flowers: Pale blue to bluish-green, 0.8–1.1 cm, borne in dense clusters from leafless pseudobulbs
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
-
Temperature: Cool to cold conditions; daytime temperatures of 18–22°C (64–72°F) and nighttime temperatures of 10–14°C (50–57°F).
-
Humidity: High humidity levels, ideally around 70–80%.
-
Watering: Regular watering during the growing season; ensure the substrate remains moist but not waterlogged.
-
Substrate: Well-draining mix; can be grown mounted on cork or tree fern panels to mimic its natural epiphytic habitat.
-
Fertilization: Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at 1/4 to 1/2 strength every two weeks during the growing season.
-
Rest Period: Provide a dry winter rest with reduced watering to initiate flowering.
