Dendrobium lindleyi is a striking epiphytic orchid native to Southeast Asia, including regions like Assam (India), Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. It thrives in mountainous areas at elevations ranging from 650 to 1,400 meters, where it grows on branches of deciduous trees.
Features:
-
Size: Typically grows to a height of 10–20 cm (4–8 inches).
-
Pseudobulbs: Short, thick, and spindle-shaped, each bearing a single leathery leaf.
-
Flowers: Each flower measures 2.5–5.0 cm in diameter, with rounded, flat petals that are usually yellow, sometimes deepening to orange. The lip is typically orange-yellow with a darker base.
-
Fragrance: Emits a mild, honey-like scent, particularly pronounced in the early morning and evening.
Care Tips:
Light: Requires bright, indirect light year-round. Insufficient light can prevent blooming.
Temperature:
-
Daytime: 77–82°F (25–28°C) in summer.
-
Nighttime: 50–60°F (10–16°C) during the winter rest period to induce blooming.
Watering:
-
Growing Season: Keep the plant moist, ensuring the substrate dries out between waterings.
-
Winter Rest: Reduce watering significantly, allowing the plant to dry out; water only sparingly if pseudobulbs become shriveled.
Humidity:
-
Summer: Maintain 80–85% humidity.
-
Winter: Maintain 60–65% humidity.
Fertilization:
-
Growing Season: Fertilize weekly with a half-strength, high-nitrogen fertilizer.
-
Winter Rest: Withhold fertilization to mimic natural dormancy.
Mounting: Ideal for mounting on cork bark or tree fern slabs, allowing for excellent air circulation and humidity retention.
