Dendrobium loddigesii is a charming miniature orchid native to the subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including Laos, Vietnam, and the southern provinces of China such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, and Yunnan. It thrives at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 meters in humid, mossy, mixed, and coniferous forests.
Features:
-
Growth Habit: Epiphytic, lithophytic, or terrestrial, forming tufted, pendant, and striated stems that are several-noded and white-sheathed.
-
Size: Reaches 10–18 cm in height.
-
Leaves: Alternate, fleshy, oblong, and acute, approximately 4–6 cm long.
-
Flowers: Single, long-lived, fragrant blooms measuring about 5 cm in diameter. The outer whorls are pale pinkish-purple, and the inner whorls are lilac. The lip is pink-purple with a yellow-orange shield and white edges.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. The plant requires a light level of 20,000–30,000 lux. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during high temperatures, as it can scorch the leaves.
-
Temperature:
-
Summer: Daytime temperatures of 24–25°C (75–77°F), with nighttime lows around 20°C (68°F), creating a daily temperature differential of 4–5°C.
-
Winter: Daytime temperatures of 11–14°C (52–57°F), with nighttime lows between 7–10°C (45–50°F), resulting in a daily temperature difference of 4–5°C.
-
-
Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels, ideally around 80% for most of the year. In the fall and early winter, humidity can drop to 70%.
-
Watering: Water moderately during the growing season from spring to autumn. Once new growths reach maturity in autumn, gradually reduce watering to allow the plant to rest.
-
Substrate: Best grown mounted on tree fern rootstock due to their creeping, hanging habit. If potted, use a flat container with a quickly drying substrate.
-
Fertilization: Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at 1/4–1/2 strength every two weeks during the growing season.
-
Rest Period: Provide a dry winter rest with reduced watering to initiate flowering. Ensure the plant does not dry out completely during this period.
