Dendrobium nobile is a stunning orchid species native to the Himalayas, southern China, and Southeast Asia. Renowned for its graceful, arching canes and fragrant, waxy blooms, it has become a popular choice among orchid enthusiasts and is even the state flower of Sikkim, India.
Features:
-
Growth Habit: Dendrobium nobile is a sympodial orchid that forms pseudobulbs. When one stem ceases growing, new shoots arise from the base, continuing the cycle and forming a clump of stems.
-
Flowers: The orchid produces short, 2 to 4-flowered racemes with blooms that are fragrant, waxy, and highly variable in color, ranging from white to pink and purple.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch, so it's best to place the plant near an east- or west-facing window.
-
Temperature: Maintain daytime temperatures between 64–77°F (18–25°C) and nighttime temperatures around 50°F (10°C). A slight drop in night temperatures can help initiate flower buds.
-
Humidity: High humidity is beneficial. Misting the plant twice daily or using a humidity tray can help maintain the required moisture levels.
-
Watering: Water freely during the growing season (late spring to summer), allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to prevent root rot.
-
Fertilization: During the active growing phase, apply orchid fertilizer every third watering. Reduce or eliminate fertilization during the dormant period in winter.
-
Potting Mix: Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as one designed for epiphytic orchids, to ensure proper aeration and prevent root rot.
