Dendrobium papilio is a cool-growing epiphytic orchid native to the Philippines, known for its tall, slender, bamboo-like canes adorned with sparse grass-like leaves. It produces elegant, translucent white flowers—often solitary—with a broad, spatulate lip detailed with pale purple stripes and a greenish-yellow throat, creating a delicately beautiful appearance.
Features:
-
Growth Form: Thin, jointed canes (30–45 cm tall), sometimes spotted, carrying few two-ranked grass-like leaves (about 4–5 cm long).
-
Flowers: Single fragrant blooms (4–7 cm diameter) with pure white petals and a pale-striped lip. The floral display is often described as ethereal and butterfly-like.
-
Forms: Includes the “Fischer strain,” which features larger flowers and canes up to approximately 1 m, ideal for mounting or displaying pendulously.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright but indirect light—about 20,000–30,000 lux. Avoid direct sun to prevent leaf burn.
-
Temperature: Intermediate to cool. Ideal daytime: 20–22 °C (68–72 °F); nighttime: 11–13 °C (52–55 °F). Maintain a day–night temperature difference of 8–10 °C.
-
Humidity: High humidity is preferred—around 80–85% year-round.
-
Watering: Keep the media consistently moist. Water 2–3 times per week when potted; more often if mounted. Reduce slightly in winter but do not let roots dry out completely.
-
Substrate / Mounting: Can be mounted on cork or tree fern for a cascading display, or potted in fast-draining media such as fine bark mixed with perlite or Growstones.
-
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer at ¼–½ strength weekly or biweekly during active growth. Reduce or stop during winter.
-
Rest Period: In winter, slightly reduce watering and fertilizer but avoid letting the roots dry completely.
