Dendrobium pseudotenellum is a rare and elegant epiphytic orchid species native to the montane forests of southern Yunnan, China, and northern Vietnam. It thrives at elevations around 900 meters, typically growing on tree trunks in shaded areas.
Features:
-
Leaves: The plant carries 4 to 6 ascending, slender, fleshy leaves that are acute at the apex and contract below into a clasping sheath base.
-
Flowers: Dendrobium pseudotenellum blooms in late summer, producing a single, small flower approximately 5 mm in diameter. The flower arises from nodes near the apex of the stem and is characterized by its delicate appearance.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Placing the plant less than 3 feet from a south-facing window can maximize growth potential.
-
Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 30°C (65°F to 86°F) during the day, with nighttime temperatures around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F).
-
Humidity: Ensure humidity levels between 50% and 70% to mimic its native environment.
-
Watering: Water the plant regularly, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the winter rest period and avoid letting the plant sit in water to prevent root rot.
-
Fertilization: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing during the winter rest period.
-
Potting Medium: Plant in a well-draining medium such as orchid bark, sphagnum moss, or perlite to ensure proper root aeration and prevent waterlogging.
