Dendrobium scoriarum, described by W.W. Smith in 1921, is a cool-growing epiphytic or lithophytic orchid native to the subtropical regions of southeastern Yunnan and Guangxi in China, extending into northern Vietnam. It thrives at elevations around 1,200 meters, often found on tree trunks and rocks in sparse woodlands or at the forest edge.
Features:
-
Size: Small to medium, reaching up to 60 cm in height.
-
Stems: Erect, slender, many-noded, and terete (round in cross-section).
-
Leaves: Oblong-lanceolate, coriaceous (leathery), obtuse to slightly bilobed at the apex, approximately 4 cm long.
-
Flowers: White to yellowish with a pinkish hue; the lip is pale yellow flushed with purple at the base, featuring a purple transverse mark. The anther cap is entirely yellow.
-
Blooming Season: Spring, on a 1 to 2-flowered inflorescence arising from older leafless stems.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide medium to high light levels, approximately 25,000–35,000 lux. Bright, indirect light is ideal; avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn .
-
Temperature:
-
Summer: Daytime temperatures around 23–24°C (73–75°F), with nighttime lows of 17–18°C (63–64°F), creating a daily temperature differential of 6–7°C.
-
Winter: Daytime temperatures of 17–18°C (63–64°F), with nighttime lows between 0–2°C (32–36°F), resulting in a significant daily temperature drop of 16–18°C .
-
-
Humidity: Maintain humidity levels between 60% and 70%.
-
Watering: Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during the winter rest period to prevent root rot .
-
Substrate: Use a well-draining medium such as a mix of bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss. Alternatively, mount the plant on cork or tree fern panels to mimic its natural epiphytic habitat.
-
Fertilization: Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at 1/4 to 1/2 strength every two weeks during the growing season.
-
Rest Period: Allow a winter rest by reducing watering and withholding fertilizer. Ensure the plant does not dry out completely during this period.
