Dendrobium serratilabium is a graceful, medium‑sized epiphytic orchid native to the Philippines (particularly Luzon and Mindanao) . It grows on trees or rocks in lowland tropical forests and produces pendulous, club‑shaped, wrinkled stems up to about 1 m long, adorned with slender, deciduous leaves.
Features:
-
Habitat: Epiphyte in humid tropical forests, often in partial shade
-
Growth: Pendulous pseudobulbs 30 cm–1 m long; deciduous lanceolate leaves
-
Flowers: 3–4 cm, fragrant, yellow‑green with toothed lip and subtle striping; bloom in fall
Care Tips:
-
Light
-
Prefers bright, indirect light or semishade. Avoiding strong direct sun prevents leaf burn.
-
-
Temperature & Humidity
-
Warm to intermediate conditions during growth (20–30 °C / 68–86 °F). Nighttime drops of ~6–10 °C beneficial.
-
Maintain humidity around 50–70%, mimicking its tropical forest climate.
-
-
Watering & Potting Mix
-
Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as bark-based media, to prevent root issues.
-
Water thoroughly when the top inch dries, then let it drain fully. Reduce watering during winter dormancy—never letting the substrate fully dry.
-
-
Fertilizer
-
Use a balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Apply at half-strength every 2–4 weeks.
-
-
Airflow & Potting
-
Provide good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
-
Repot every 2–3 years in spring, ideally when new growth has doubled.
