Dendrobium signatum is a medium-sized epiphytic orchid native to Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. It thrives at elevations ranging from 200 to 1,500 meters above sea level, typically growing on tree trunks in forests.
Features:
-
Growth Habit: This species features slender, fleshy pseudobulbs that become pendulous with age, reaching up to 50 cm in length. The leathery, lanceolate leaves are deciduous, shedding after a cool, dry winter rest period.
-
Flowers: Dendrobium signatum blooms in winter through early summer on a short inflorescence arising from a mature, leafless cane. It produces two fragrant, long-lived flowers, each measuring 1.6 to 2.4 inches (4 to 6 cm) across. The flowers exhibit variable coloration, ranging from greenish-white to yellowish-green-white, with a pale yellow labellum featuring two dark brown spots.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide medium to bright indirect light. Direct sunlight may scorch the leaves, so it's best to place the plant in a location with filtered light.
-
Temperature: Maintain daytime temperatures between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C), with a nighttime drop of about 10°F (5.5°C). A winter rest period at around 55°F (13°C) for several weeks can help prompt reblooming.
-
Humidity: Dendrobium signatum prefers a humidity level between 50% and 70%. If the air is too dry, brown leaf tips may appear.
-
Watering: Water the plant regularly during the growing season, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in the fall and winter to prevent root rot.
-
Fertilization: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer during the active growing phase. Reduce or eliminate fertilization during the dormant period in winter.
-
Potting Mix: Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as one designed for epiphytic orchids, to ensure proper aeration and prevent root rot.
