Dendrobium unicum is a captivating miniature orchid species native to Southeast Asia, particularly found in northern Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. This species is celebrated for its striking orange flowers and distinctive growth habits.

Features:

  • Native Habitat: Evergreen, semi-deciduous, and deciduous dry lowland forests and savanna-like woodlands at elevations of 800 to 1550 meters. It grows on rocks and small bushes.

  • Growth Form: Miniature-sized, epiphytic or lithophytic orchid reaching 7–9 cm in height.

  • Flowering Season: Late spring to early summer.

  • Flower Structure: Each inflorescence bears up to 4 fragrant flowers, approximately 3.5–5.0 cm in diameter. The blooms feature long, slender petals and a large, upward-facing lip.

  • Fragrance: Emits a delightful fragrance reminiscent of tangerines.

Care Tips:

Light: Requires bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it's best to place the plant in a location with filtered light.

Temperature: Prefers intermediate to warm temperatures, with daytime temperatures ranging from 27–34°C and nighttime temperatures between 14–21°C during the growing season.

Humidity: Thrives in high humidity, ideally between 80–85% during the growing season. Humidity can fall to around 55% during the winter months.

Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings. During the dormant period in winter, reduce watering to encourage blooming.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer every 2 weeks during the growing season. Withhold fertilization during the dormant period.

Potting Medium: Suitable for mounting on cork or tree fern slabs, or growing in a well-draining orchid mix such as bark or sphagnum moss.

Rest Period: From autumn until spring, reduce watering and allow the plant to dry slightly before the next watering. Avoid fertilizing during this period.
