Diaphananthe millarii

Diaphananthe millarii is a rare and charming miniature epiphytic orchid endemic to the coastal forests of eastern South Africa. It grows as a compact plant with several slender, linear to lance-shaped leaves and produces elegant pendant inflorescences carrying numerous small, delicate white to translucent flowers. Each bloom is only about 1.25 cm (0.5 in) across but features a distinctive long, funnel-shaped spur. The flowers appear mainly in spring and summer and are pleasantly fragrant, making this uncommon species especially appealing to collectors of miniature African orchids. In nature, it grows as a low-level epiphyte on the underside of branches in light shade, generally at low elevations.

Care Tips:

• Provide medium, filtered light and avoid strong direct midday sunlight.
• Maintain moderate to high humidity with good, continuous air circulation.
• Water regularly, keeping the fine roots from becoming completely dry for extended periods, but avoid constantly wet conditions.
• Use a small, open, fast-draining medium or mount the plant on cork/tree fern for excellent root ventilation.
• Maintain cool to intermediate temperatures, with some seasonal cooling and reduced watering during winter.
• Feed lightly with a balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth.
• Repot or remount toward the end of winter when new growth begins, minimizing disturbance to its delicate root system.
