Thuidium kanedae, commonly known as Fern Moss, is a moss species that can appear green or yellow-green, depending on the light exposure. It is a dioecious moss, meaning it has both male and female reproductive organs on separate plants. With its delicate, fern-like appearance, Fern Moss is one of the easiest mosses for beginners to recognize. The plants grow flat and prostrate, with stems and fine branches that bear opaque green or yellow-green leaves. While it looks beautiful when moist, it shrivels and loses its charm when dry.
Care Tips:
- Humidity: Requires high humidity. You can increase the humidity by covering the container to trap moisture.
- Light: Prefers low light (500-6000 lux is suitable).
- Temperature: Best kept in low temperatures (0-25°C).
Tips:
- Fern Moss can be grown on the sides of containers to simulate cascading branches.
- It also works well in kokedama (moss balls) or as an epiphyte on wood.
This moss thrives in high humidity, low light, and cool temperatures, making it ideal for terrariums, aquascapes, or decorative moss arrangements.
