Gastrochilus calceolaris is a medium-sized epiphytic orchid species. It features a very short stem carrying distichous leaves (arranged in two vertical rows), with blades that are falcate (sickle-shaped) to narrowly oblong and having an apex that is unequally 2-lobed.
The flowers are somewhat translucent cream or pale, marked with dark brown or purple-brown spots; the lip (labellum) often has a white epichile and a yellow hypochile with colored markings.
Natural Habitat & Distribution:
-
Widely distributed in Southeast Asia: eastern Himalayas, Assam (India), Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Yunnan & Hainan (China), Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, Philippines.
-
Grows as an epiphyte in evergreen lowland forests or primary montane forests, typically at elevations between ~200-2300 meters.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Provide some shade to avoid leaf burn.
-
Temperature: Prefers intermediate to cool-warm temperatures. It can tolerate cooler nights especially in montane forest conditions.
-
Humidity: High humidity helps. Good air circulation is important to avoid fungal issues.
-
Watering: Water frequently during the active growth / warmer season, but allow roots to dry slightly between waterings to avoid rot. After flowering reduce watering a bit.
-
Substrate / Mounting: Best mounted on bark, tree fern slabs, cork, or use very well-drained media (coarse bark, sphagnum, etc.). Hanging baskets or mounts are useful.
