Gastrochilus hainanensis Z.H. Tsi (1989) is an accepted species in the genus Gastrochilus. It is native to Hainan, China, and extends across Indo-China, including Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. This epiphytic, sympodial orchid typically grows on tree trunks in shady forest environments. It has been recorded at relatively low elevations, around 100–200 meters above sea level, inhabiting lowland to lower subtropical forest zones.
Features:
-
Morphological Features:
-
Stem: Short (approx. 3 cm long)
-
Leaves: About five fleshy, thick, obliquely elliptic leaves; the midrib is very prominent on the back. The leaf tip is rounded; the apex is unequally bilobed.
-
Flowers: Inflorescences are short, arising from internodes of the stem, with about four flowers. The petals/lateral sepals have particular shapes (lanceolate or obovate), colored pale yellow with dark red dots; the back is greenish.
-
-
Flowering Time: Observed flowering in December in certain localities (e.g. Malaysia).
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Since in nature it grows in shady trunks/forest understory, avoid harsh direct sunlight.
-
Temperature: Because it is found in low elevations in tropical/subtropical climates, warm conditions are appropriate. Maintain temperatures roughly between 20-30 °C (68-86 °F). Avoid cold drafts or chilling.
-
Humidity: High humidity is beneficial, similar to humid forest conditions.
-
Growing Medium / Mounting: Grow epiphytically (mounted or on bark) or in an orchid mix that ensures good drainage and airflow.
-
Watering: Water regularly, ensuring moisture but avoid letting water sit around roots or cause rot. Let the medium dry slightly between waterings.
