Gastrochilus kadooriei is a rare and captivating orchid species native to Hong Kong, southern China, Laos, and Vietnam. Known for its unique growth habit and delicate flowers, this orchid is a fascinating subject for orchid enthusiasts. Due to its specific environmental requirements, it is well-suited for terrariums, where humidity and temperature can be controlled to mimic its native habitat, providing the ideal conditions for growth and blooming.

Features:

  • Native Range: Hong Kong, southern China (Yunnan), Laos, Vietnam

  • Habitat: Epiphytic subshrub found on moss-covered granite rocks and boulders near seasonal streams at elevations of 1,000–1,500 meters.

  • Etymology: Named in honor of Sir Horace Kadoorie, co-founder of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, Hong Kong.

Care Tips:

Light

Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the tiny leaves. Ideal placement includes east or north-facing windows or under shaded grow lights.

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 21–29°C (70–85°F). This species can tolerate cooler nights but should not be exposed to temperatures below 15°C (59°F).

Watering

Water regularly to keep the orchid moist but not waterlogged. Since it is often grown mounted, it tends to dry out quickly; misting every 1–2 days is recommended. During the fall and winter months, as the plant enters a dormant phase, reduce watering frequency.

Humidity

High humidity is essential for this orchid's health. Aim for humidity levels between 60–80%. Regular misting or using a humidity tray can help maintain the necessary moisture levels. A Terrarium is also a great option, as it naturally maintains high humidity and creates an ideal environment for the orchid.

Mounting and Substrate

Gastrochilus kadooriei thrives when mounted on materials like cork bark or tree fern fiber. This setup mimics its natural epiphytic habitat and ensures proper air circulation around the roots.
