Gastrochilus obliquus (Lindl.) Kuntze is a miniature epiphytic orchid native to the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan, Sikkim, Myanmar, northern Thailand, southern China, Laos, and Vietnam. It grows in dense forests, often on tree trunks, at elevations of roughly 800-1400 meters.

Features:

  • The plant has a very short stem with about 3-5 leaves; leaves are persistent, linear-oblong to obovate-oblong, slightly leathery, bright green, with a bifid (split) apex.

  • Flowering occurs in the fall or early winter; inflorescences are axillary, pendulous, often with 5-8 fragrant, long-lasting flowers. Flowers are typically pale yellow petals/sepals and white lip with yellow or yellow-spot center, often with spots.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Morning sun or filtered light works; avoid harsh midday sun.

  • Temperature: Warm to cool-intermediate range. Daytime ideally ~20-30 °C, nights cooler but not freezing.

  • Humidity: High humidity is helpful; keep the environment moist. Airflow is important to reduce risk of fungal problems.

  • Water & Watering Regime: Water 1-2 times a week; allow substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid water pooling around roots.

  • Mounting / Substrate: Many growers prefer mounting the plant (on bark, wood) for better drainage; it can also be grown in a pot with a very well-draining orchid mix.

  • Blooming Period: Fall to early winter is the typical time for flowering. Provide optimal environmental conditions as bloom season approaches.
