Gastrochilus sinensis Z. H. Tsi (1989) is a small epiphytic orchid native to southern China, typically found at elevations of 800–3200 m on tree trunks or occasionally on rocks in forested areas.
It has a creeping stem up to 20 cm long with small oblong to elliptic leaves, and produces umbels of 2–3 yellow-green flowers marked with purple-red spots. The distinctive lip is divided into a saccate hypochile and a kidney-shaped epichile with fine hairs. Flowering usually occurs in October.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid strong direct sun especially midday.
-
Watering & Humidity: Keep humidity relatively high. Water regularly in growing season but ensure good drainage; avoid letting roots stay soggy.
-
Temperature: Prefers cool to intermediate-warm conditions; tolerates moderate elevation temperatures.
-
Substrate & Mounting: Mount on bark or use a mix with good airflow (e.g., bark + moss). The creeping stem benefits from support or mount.
-
Flowering care: Provide favorable conditions (good humidity, stable temps) leading up to its natural bloom period (around October) to stimulate flowering.
