Habenaria carnea f. nivosa is the white-flowered form of Habenaria carnea. The species is a small, tuberous terrestrial orchid native from Peninsular Thailand to Peninsular Malaysia, typically growing in wet tropical habitats.
The typical H. carnea is valued for its beautiful dark purple to silver-green mottled foliage and subtle pink flowers. The f. nivosa form is distinguished by its white flowers, creating a particularly attractive contrast with the patterned leaves. The American Orchid Society specifically describes it as an alba form of H. carnea.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide low to medium light during active growth. A bright windowsill with filtered light works well.
- Watering: Keep the medium consistently moist while actively growing. Habenaria can develop weak, accordion-like growth if allowed to dry repeatedly.
- Growing Medium: Use a loose, well-draining mix such as sphagnum with fine orchid bark and/or perlite. The medium should retain moisture without becoming stagnant.
- Humidity: Around 50–80% humidity is suitable, with good air circulation particularly important for preventing leaf spotting.
- Temperature: During active growth, approximately 18–29°C (65–85°F) during the day and above 10°C (50°F) at night is suitable.
- Fertilizing: Feed lightly and regularly during active growth. A diluted fertilizer applied weekly is suitable; do not fertilize during dormancy.
- Airflow: Provide gentle but continuous airflow, especially in warm and humid conditions.
- Dormancy: After flowering, the leaves naturally die back. Gradually reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy and withhold regular watering once the above-ground growth has disappeared.
- Repotting: Repot around the beginning of new growth, generally in late winter or spring, so the developing tuber can establish undisturbed during the growing season.
