Habenaria rhodocheila Red form is a tuberous terrestrial orchid native from Assam and southern China through mainland Southeast Asia to Peninsular Malaysia.

The Red form is a highly attractive color form selected for its intense red to reddish-orange flowers. The flowers are produced on upright stems above a compact rosette of green leaves, creating a colorful display during the active growing season. H. rhodocheila belongs to the group of smaller Habenaria species that generally prefer lower light than the larger Habenaria species.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide low to medium light during active growth. A bright windowsill with filtered light is suitable. The H. rhodocheila complex generally requires less light than larger Habenaria species.
  • Watering: Keep the medium consistently moist during active growth. Avoid repeated drying, which can cause weak, accordion-like growth.
  • Growing Medium: Use a loose, well-draining terrestrial orchid mix that retains moisture without becoming compacted. A soilless mix with perlite, fine bark or charcoal works well.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity is sufficient, but good air circulation is important. The thin foliage can be prone to fungal and bacterial spotting in stagnant conditions.
  • Temperature: During active growth, maintain approximately 18–29°C (65–85°F) during the day and above 10°C (50°F) at night. Avoid frost.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Use low-mineral water when possible because Habenaria can be sensitive to accumulated salts.
  • Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous air movement, particularly when humidity is high.
  • Dormancy: After flowering, the foliage will gradually deteriorate. Reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy and stop watering completely once the foliage has died back. Keep the dormant tuber dry until new growth begins.
  • Repotting: Repot while dormant or just before new growth begins. Avoid watering dormant tubers heavily, as excess moisture can cause rot.
  • Flowering: Keep the plant continuously moist during active growth and flowering. After flowering, continue watering for a short period while the plant develops the new underground tuber, then allow it to enter dormancy naturally.
