Hoya benchaii

Hoya benchaii is a rare epiphytic climbing Hoya from Sabah, Borneo, first collected in the Telupid area east of Ranau and formally described in 2014. It develops thick, leathery, glossy green leaves with clearly visible venation and a compact, twining growth habit. The species is particularly attractive when mature, producing unusual rounded, waxy flowers in small clusters; flower coloration has been reported from white to soft pink, depending on the cultivated form. Its substantial foliage, distinctive rounded blooms, and relative rarity make Hoya benchaii a desirable species for specialist Hoya collections.

Care Tips:

• Provide bright, indirect or filtered light; gentle morning sun is beneficial, while harsh afternoon sun should be avoided.
• Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining substrate such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco-based material.
• Water when the surface of the medium has dried, allowing some drying between waterings while avoiding prolonged complete dryness.
• Maintain 60–80% humidity with good air circulation.
• Keep temperatures around 18–30°C (64–86°F) and protect from prolonged cold.
• Provide a trellis or climbing support, although the stems can also be allowed to trail.
• Fertilize lightly during active growth with a balanced fertilizer.
• Avoid removing old flower peduncles, as Hoyas can rebloom from established spurs.
