Hoya callistophylla is a striking climbing Hoya native to Borneo, best known for its large, thick, leathery leaves decorated with dramatic dark green veins that form an intricate, map-like pattern. The vines can grow several meters long, making it well suited to a trellis or hanging display. Mature plants produce rounded umbels of approximately 20–40 small, waxy, star-shaped flowers, ranging from pale yellow and cream to brownish-gold, often with contrasting darker centers and a mild fragrance. Its highly ornamental foliage, unusual venation, and attractive flower clusters make Hoya callistophylla one of the most distinctive foliage Hoyas for collectors.
Care Tips:
- Provide bright, filtered light with gentle morning or late-afternoon sun.
- Use a very airy, porous, fast-draining mix suitable for epiphytic plants, such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco-based materials.
- Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the substrate has dried, but never leave the roots sitting in water.
- Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, with good air circulation.
- Keep temperatures warm to intermediate, avoiding prolonged cold conditions.
- Provide a trellis or climbing support for the long, vigorous vines.
- Fertilize with a diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth.
- Avoid cutting mature flower peduncles, as Hoyas can rebloom from established spurs.
