Hoya caudata ssp. red is the easiest to grow and bloom among the Hoya caudata. Its leaves are smaller and have fewer splashes compared to other Hoya caudata, but it grows much faster.

Care Tips:

  • Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. A few hours of gentle morning sun will enhance the red coloration of the leaves. Avoid harsh midday sunlight, which can cause leaf burn.

  • Water:
Water thoroughly when the top layer of the soil feels dry. Do not overwater or let the plant sit in water, as soggy roots may cause rot. Reduce watering slightly during cooler months.

  • Soil:
Use a loose, well-draining mix suitable for epiphytic Hoyas. A good combination is orchid bark, perlite, and coco chips (1:1:1). This provides airflow and prevents compaction.

  • Temperature:
Best growth occurs between 20–28°C. Keep the plant above 15°C at all times. Protect from cold drafts or sudden temperature drops.

  • Humidity:
Thrives in 60–80% humidity. In drier environments, mist the plant occasionally or use a humidifier to maintain moisture in the air.

  • Fertilizer:
Feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Switch to a bloom fertilizer (higher phosphorus) when buds appear.

  • Growth:
This subspecies grows faster than most Hoya caudata types. It produces new vines readily and blooms easily once mature. Avoid cutting old flower stalks, as they rebloom from the same spots.

  • Tip:
Leaves turn red under strong light and greener in shade. Both colors are normal and depend on growing conditions.
