Hoya Compacta Inner Variegated ‘Mauna Loa’ is a variegated form of Hoya carnosa compacta (commonly known as “Hindu Rope”), featuring inner variegation with lighter centers — white, cream, or yellow — surrounded by darker green margins.
Features:
-
Leaves are thick, curled or “rope-like,” succulent in texture (they retain water) typical of compacta types.
-
Slow growing, prized by collectors because of its unusual and attractive variegation.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Some morning or late afternoon sun helps enhance the lighter variegation but avoid harsh direct midday sun which can burn the foliage.
-
Temperature: Keeps best in warm conditions, about 60-80°F (15-27°C). Protect from cold, drafts, or temps under ~50-55°F.
-
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Since the leaves are thick, the plant tolerates drier air better than thin-leaved Hoyas, but low humidity can lead to brown leaf tips or loss of variegation.
-
Watering: Allow top soil to dry somewhat between waterings. Avoid letting the roots sit in water. In warm growing periods, water more regularly; reduce during cooler times.
-
Soil / Medium: Use a well-draining, loose mix. Orchid bark, perlite, chunky potting mix are good. Good drainage is essential.
-
Fertilizer: Light feeding during spring and summer works well. Monthly diluted balanced fertilizer often recommended.
-
Propagation: Cuttings with a node tend to root (but often slow). Maintaining high humidity during rooting helps.
-
Variegation Stability: Inner variegation can be less stable than outer. If parts revert to all green, cut back to variegated growth. Good light helps maintain variegation.
