Hoya deykeae

Hoya deykeae is a distinctive Hoya native to Sumatra, Indonesia, where it grows in the wet tropical biome. It is especially valued for its heart-shaped, light-green leaves with prominent darker green veins. The long, slender stems have a trailing to twining habit, making it suitable for a hanging basket or small trellis. Mature plants can produce rounded clusters of small, creamy-yellow, star-shaped flowers with a lightly sweet fragrance.

Care Tips:

• Light: Provide bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. Gentle morning sun can encourage compact growth and flowering, while strong midday sun should be filtered.
• Watering: Allow the growing medium to partially dry before watering thoroughly. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet. Hoyas generally perform best when excess water drains freely.
• Growing Medium: Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and organic material. Good root aeration is important for this epiphytic species.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, with good airflow to prevent stagnant, overly humid conditions.
• Temperature: Keep warm, ideally around 18–29°C (65–85°F). Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 13°C (55°F).
• Fertilizing: Feed lightly with a diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth.
• Support: Allow the slender stems to trail naturally or train them around a small hoop or trellis.
• Potting: Use a relatively small pot with an airy growing medium. Avoid oversized containers that stay wet for extended periods.
• Flowering: Keep light, temperature, and watering conditions stable when buds develop. Leave old flower peduncles intact because Hoyas can rebloom from established peduncles.
