Hoya elliptica

Hoya elliptica is a beautiful tropical climbing epiphyte native from Thailand through western Malesia, including Borneo, Malaya, and Sumatra. It is especially admired for its thick, elliptic green leaves, which are decorated with a prominent network of darker veins that gives the foliage a distinctive, almost embossed appearance. Mature plants produce clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers and develop attractive twining stems that can be trained around a support or allowed to trail. Its unusual veined foliage makes Hoya elliptica a popular choice for Hoya collectors.

Care Tips:

• Light: Provide bright, indirect or filtered light. A few hours of gentle morning sunlight can be beneficial, but protect the foliage from strong midday sun. Bright light also encourages flowering.
• Watering: Allow the growing medium to partially dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.
• Growing Medium: Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of organic material. Good root aeration is important for this epiphytic species.
• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is ideal. Good airflow should be maintained when humidity is high.
• Temperature: Keep warm and protect the plant from prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.
• Fertilizing: Feed lightly with a diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth.
• Support: Provide a small trellis, hoop, or other support for the climbing stems, or allow the vines to trail naturally.
• Flowering: Do not remove old flower spurs after blooming. Hoyas can rebloom from the same peduncles, so leaving them intact helps preserve future flowering sites.
