Hoya imbricata

Hoya imbricata is one of the most unusual and recognizable Hoyas, famous for its distinctive shingling growth habit. Native from the Philippines to Sulawesi, it is an epiphytic climber that produces large, rounded, succulent leaves which press tightly against tree trunks or other surfaces, overlapping like roof tiles. The mature leaves can develop attractive mottled green and silvery patterns, while the unusual shield-like foliage creates a highly architectural appearance.

Care Tips:

• Provide bright, filtered light with gentle morning sun; avoid strong direct afternoon sunlight.
• Provide a vertical, flat growing surface such as cork bark, a wood board, or a moss-covered support so the leaves can develop their natural shingling habit.
• Use a very airy, fast-draining substrate with excellent root aeration while retaining moderate moisture.
• Keep humidity high, ideally 70–90%, with good air circulation.
• Water regularly during active growth, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings but avoiding prolonged complete dryness.
• Maintain warm temperatures, ideally around 20–30°C (68–86°F), and protect from prolonged cold.
• Fertilize lightly with a balanced fertilizer during active growth.
• Avoid repeatedly moving or turning the plant once it begins shingling, as stable contact with its support encourages the characteristic overlapping leaf growth.
