Hoya krohniana ‘Super Silver’ is a rare and highly prized cultivar of Hoya krohniana, known for its leaves that are almost entirely silver with just minimal green – the silver splash is very intense.

Features:

  • It has small, heart-shaped (cordate) and smooth/glabrous leaves, arranged oppositely, with pinnate venation.

  • Growth habit is trailing or twining (can climb if given support). It is epiphytic in nature (grows on trees in wild), which means it prefers airy media and good drainage.

  • Leaves have a metallic sheen; under good light the silver effect is maximized. If light is low, silver variegation may fade and more green shows.

  • Flowers: when mature, it might produce clusters of small, fuzzy, star-shaped creamy-white flowers.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is essential. East or west facing windows (with filtered light) are best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight especially in afternoon, which can burn leaves.

  • Watering: Let the top portion of the soil dry out between waterings. This plant tolerates brief dry spells. Overwatering (or soil staying wet too long) can lead to root rot.

  • Soil / Medium: Use a well-draining, airy mix. Good components: orchid bark, perlite, chunkier stuff, maybe some coco coir or peat for slight moisture retention. Avoid heavy compacted soil. Pots must have drainage.

  • Temperature: Likes warmth. Ideal range ~ 18-27 °C (65-80°F). Avoid cold drafts; do not let temps drop too low.

  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps maintain foliage health and prevents browning edges. If your indoor air is dry, consider humidity trays, grouping, or humidifiers.

  • Fertilizer: During active growth (spring & summer), feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks. Reduce feeding in cooler/dormant periods. For bloom encouragement, fertilizers with a bit more phosphorus/potassium can help.

  • Pruning & Maintenance: Remove any dead or damaged leaves. Keep the plant tidy, especially vines that get too long. If you want fuller growth, prune strategically. Do not remove flower spurs once blooming, so it can rebloom.

  • Propagation: Rooting with stem cuttings works well. Use cuttings with 2-3 nodes. Medium can be water, sphagnum moss, or moist potting mix. Maintain warm, humid environment during rooting.

  • Troubleshooting:

    • If leaves turn more green and lose silver, light may be too low.

    • Wrinkled or soft leaves may indicate underwatering or root issues.

    • Brown leaf edges = possibly low humidity or inconsistent watering.

    • Keep an eye out for pests like mealybugs, spider mites, etc., which can afflict many Hoyas if conditions are too stagnant.
