Hoya ‘Mathilde Splash’ is a hybrid of Hoya carnosa × Hoya serpens. It is prized for its small, ovate/fleshy leaves that are green but heavily “splashed” with silver or white markings (the “splash” effect). When mature, it can produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers—often white or pale pink with a contrasting center.
Features:
-
Compact trailing or climbing habit—good for hanging baskets, shelves, or trellises.
-
Small, succulent leaves with silver/white “splash” pattern that becomes more visible under good indirect light.
-
Flowers are star-shaped, with fuzzy texture and a sweet fragrance. Flower clusters appear when the plant is mature and well-cared for.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Too little light → weak splash and slower growth; too much direct sun → leaf burn.
-
Temperature: Prefers warm conditions; about 18-29 °C (65-85 °F). Avoid exposing it to temperatures below ~ 12-14 °C (50-57 °F).
-
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial (above ~ 50-60%); the splash pattern tends to improve with better humidity.
-
Watering: Let the potting mix dry somewhat between waterings. Overwatering is a common problem, so ensure good drainage.
-
Soil / Potting Medium: Use a well-draining, airy mix, often epiphytic style with orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, etc. Avoid heavy, compact soils.
-
Fertilizer: During active growth (spring/summer), feed with a diluted, balanced fertilizer periodically. Reduce or pause during winter or slower growth periods.
-
Pruning / Blooming: Do not remove spent flower peduncles; Hoyas often rebloom from the same spots. Prune lightly to encourage fuller growth.
