Hoya obovata is a charming and relatively easy-care epiphytic vine native to South and Southeast Asia. It is noted for its thick, round to oval green leaves that sometimes display faint silver speckles, adding a subtle decorative touch. The plant grows as a trailing or climbing vine, making it ideal for hanging baskets, high shelves, or trellises.
Features:
-
Leaves: Large, glossy, succulent-like leaves (about 6–10 cm long), typically round to obovate in shape, sometimes with silvery flecks.
-
Growth habit: Trails or climbs, adaptable to indoor displays or hanging containers.
-
Flowers: When conditions are right, produces clusters of star-shaped flowers (pale corollas with darker centres) that are sweetly scented.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate lower light, but leaves may grow larger and flower less.
-
Watering: Let the soil dry out somewhat between waterings. Over-watering is a common issue.
-
Soil & Drainage: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix (for example with orchid bark or perlite) to mimic its epiphytic root zone.
-
Temperature & Humidity: Prefers warm conditions and moderate to high humidity. Avoid cold drafts.
-
Display Habit: Excellent in hanging baskets or draped over shelves where its vines and large round leaves can show off.
