Hoya retusa is a graceful trailing vine with very narrow, grass-leaf-like green leaves and slender stems, often used in hanging baskets or mounted displays. The leaves are flat and slim, creating a textured “jungle-vine” look. With proper care it may produce small, star-shaped flowers that are creamy white with red-centred coronas and carry a delicate jasmine- or lemon-like scent.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide medium to bright indirect light. Avoid intense direct sunlight as it may scorch the delicate leaves.
-
Watering: Allow the top 1-2 inches (≈2.5-5 cm) of soil to dry between waterings. Do not keep the substrate soggy. Over-watering can lead to root rot.
-
Soil/Medium: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix. A combination of coarse soil, orchid bark, perlite, or similar amendments is ideal.
-
Temperature & Humidity: Keep in a warm environment (approx. 15-28 °C / 59-82 °F). Prefers moderate to higher humidity but adapts to typical indoor conditions. Avoid cold drafts.
-
Positioning & Habit: Because of its trailing growth, it works well in hanging baskets, on shelves where the vines can spill, or mounted.
-
Fertilising: During the growing season, feed lightly with a balanced diluted fertilizer; reduce feeding during cooler/less-active periods.
-
Repotting: It generally does not need frequent repotting; being slightly root-bound is often okay.
