Hoya 'Silver Dollar' is a striking hybrid cultivar known for its thick, round to oval leaves with a shimmering silver-green surface. With ample bright light, the foliage can develop lovely lavender or purple tones—a response to “sun-stress.”
Features:
-
Unique silver-green foliage that, under higher light, can tint lavender or purple.
-
Thick, succulent-like leaves typical of epiphytic Hoyas, making it durable and decorative.
-
A trailing or vining growth habit—ideal for hanging baskets or elevated placement to display its foliage.
-
Hybrid origin, rare cultivar status, making it desirable among plant collectors.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is recommended for best colour. Too little light may cause the silver to fade or the leaves to revert. Avoid harsh direct midday sun to prevent scorching.
-
Watering: Allow the top layer of the substrate to dry out before watering again. Given its semi-succulent foliage, the plant tolerates slight dryness. Over-watering and soggy soil are common causes of problems.
-
Soil & Drainage: Use a well-draining mix (e.g., bark + perlite + coarse soil) and ensure good aeration to mimic its natural epiphytic conditions.
-
Temperature & Humidity: Ideal indoor temps around ~18-27 °C (65-80 °F). It adapts to average home humidity but performs best with moderate humidity and good air circulation.
-
Bonus Tip: If you notice the silver colour fading or the plant becoming too green, try increasing bright indirect light moderately (while watching for signs of scorch) to bring out the silver sheen and possible lavender/purple tones.
