Hoya vangviengiensis is a distinctive climbing Hoya native to the limestone landscapes of Laos and southern Yunnan, China. Discovered growing on the limestone mountains around Vang Vieng, Laos, this species is appreciated for its prominent leaf venation and attractive, naturally structured foliage. It produces clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers, with floral characteristics that help distinguish it from the closely related Hoya carnosa. Its combination of strongly veined leaves, climbing growth, and unusual floral features makes it an interesting species for Hoya collectors looking for something less common than the classic cultivated Hoyas.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, filtered or indirect light. A few hours of gentle morning sun can be beneficial, but protect the leaves from intense midday sunlight.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the growing medium has partially dried. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.
  • Growing Medium: Use a very airy, fast-draining mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and other chunky materials. Good drainage is especially important for epiphytic Hoyas.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial. Around 60–80% humidity works well when accompanied by good airflow.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally around 18–30°C (65–86°F). Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
  • Airflow: Provide good air circulation, particularly when humidity is high.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth. Avoid heavy fertilization when growth slows.
  • Support: Give the climbing stems a small trellis, hoop, or other support, or allow them to trail naturally.
  • Acclimation: This species comes from a warm, humid tropical environment, so newly shipped plants benefit from gradual acclimation to lower humidity and different light conditions.
