Hymenorchis javanica is a rare and captivating miniature orchid endemic to the misty montane forests of western Java, Indonesia, and parts of peninsular Malaysia. This epiphytic species thrives at elevations of 900 to 1,000 meters, growing on exposed tree branches in humid, shaded environments.
Features:
-
Size: A diminutive plant, typically measuring only 2 to 2.5 cm in leaf length.
-
Leaves: Oblong, fleshy, dark green above and paler below, with finely serrated margins and a few short bristles.
-
Flowers: Delicate, translucent white blooms approximately 1 cm in diameter, borne on short, pendulous inflorescences. Each flower features a subtle green marking at the center of the labellum.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Requires bright, filtered light; direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf burn.
-
Temperature: Prefers daytime temperatures between 24–26°C and nighttime temperatures around 17–19°C, maintaining consistent warmth year-round.
-
Humidity: Thrives in high humidity, ideally 80–85% during the growing season (April–November), and around 70% in winter.
-
Watering: Watering should be frequent, with the substrate allowed to dry slightly between waterings. During the rest period (December–February), reduce watering without allowing the plant to dry out completely.
-
Fertilization: Apply a diluted orchid fertilizer (about 1/4 strength) every 7–10 days during the growing season. Fertilization should be suspended during the rest period.
-
Potting Medium: Best grown mounted on a raft or cork with a thin layer of moisture-retentive medium at the roots. Avoid using sphagnum moss directly around the roots, as they need to dry quickly after watering.
