Lecanopteris mirabilis, also known as the Ant Fern, is a tropical epiphytic fern native to Papua New Guinea and Sulawesi. Its species name, mirabilis, means “wonderful” or “marvelous.” Its flattened rhizomes—up to about 25 cm in diameter—form protective coverings under which ants may shelter.

Features:

  • Ant-associated rhizome: Though not hollow like its relatives, the plant's flattened rhizome shelters ants, offering mutualistic benefits like protection and nutrient exchange.

  • Impressive fronds: Leaves (fronds) can reach up to 85 cm in length, forming distinctive and striking foliage.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

  • Water & Humidity: Keep the medium consistently moist but never waterlogged. Mist regularly or use a humidifier; ideal humidity is 60–90%.

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, ideally 18–27 °C (65–80 °F). Avoid drops below 10 °C.

  • Substrate & Mounting: Does well mounted on bark or in airy mixes like orchid bark and sphagnum. Ensure excellent drainage.

  • General Care: Water from above, allow airflow around the rhizome, and mimic its tropical forest habitat.
