Leea amabilis is a striking tropical shrub native to the rainforests of Borneo. Belonging to the genus Leea in the family Vitaceae, this plant is celebrated for its vibrant foliage and ornamental appeal.

Features:

  • Leaves: The plant features jagged, dark brownish-green leaves with a prominent white central stripe along the midrib. New foliage emerges with a bright crimson hue, transitioning to pale rose as it matures. The undersides and petioles are purplish, adding to its ornamental value.

  • Size: In its native habitat, Leea amabilis can reach up to 3 meters (approximately 10 feet) in height. However, in cultivation, it typically remains smaller, making it suitable for indoor environments.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. In its natural habitat, it thrives under the canopy of larger trees, avoiding direct sunlight.

  • Soil: Requires a well-draining, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter. An airy mix with sufficient air pockets helps prevent root rot and ensures healthy root respiration.

  • Watering: Watering needs are moderate. During the warmer months, watering 2–3 times a week is recommended, while in cooler months, watering once every two weeks suffices. It's advisable to use distilled or rainwater to avoid mineral buildup from tap water.

  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity levels, ideally between 70–100%. To maintain adequate humidity, consider using a humidifier, misting the plant regularly, or placing it in a humidity tray.

  • Temperature: Being native to tropical rainforests, it prefers temperatures between 20–25°C (68–77°F). Exposure to temperatures below 18°C (64°F) can cause stress and hinder growth.

  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to nutrient imbalances.
