Liparis cathcartii is a small terrestrial orchid native to the Himalayan region (Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan, parts of China and Myanmar). It develops ovoid pseudobulbs, each typically bearing two elliptic-ovate leaves with subtle texture. In late spring to early summer, it sends up an erect raceme of several small, greenish flowers with a purplish lip. It naturally grows on grassy slopes or in moist valley regions at elevations around 1,900 to 3,000 meters, where conditions are cool and humid.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright but filtered light; avoid direct midday sun
-
Temperature: Cool to intermediate; tolerate cooler nights (reflecting native altitude)
-
Humidity: Maintain high humidity (60-80 % or more)
-
Watering: Keep substrate evenly moist but not soggy; good drainage is essential
-
Potting & Substrate: Use a mix that retains moisture yet drains well (e.g. bark, moss, perlite)
-
Fertilizer: Use a balanced, diluted orchid fertilizer during growth periods
-
Airflow: Provide gentle air circulation to reduce fungal / rot risk
