Bulbophyllum pandurella is a rare, miniature orchid species native to Madagascar, distinguished by its lute-shaped flowers, which inspired its common name, "little lute-shaped Bulbophyllum."
Features:
-
Native Range: Northern Madagascar. It inhabits lichen- and moss-rich forests at elevations between 1100 to 2000 m.
-
Growth Habit: A mini-miniature, cool-growing epiphyte with ovoid pseudobulbs bearing two leathery, elliptical leaves. Flowers are solitary on very short (3–4.5 mm) inflorescences.
Care Tips:
Light
-
Thrive in bright shade to moderate indirect light (approx. 1000–1500 foot-candles).
-
Ideal placement: east or north-facing locations, or diffused light even from south windows.
Temperature & Climate
-
Prefer cool to intermediate conditions: daytime 20–27 °C (70–80 °F), with nighttime dips to 15–18 °C (60–65 °F). This mimic’s their native montane climate.
Humidity & Airflow
-
High humidity (≥50%) is beneficial. Use humidity trays or humidifiers and ensure gentle air circulation to reduce the risk of rot.
Watering
-
Water when the medium begins to dry but never let it fully dry out.
-
For mounted specimens, frequent misting or daily watering may be needed.
-
Use low-mineral water: rainwater, distilled, or RO to prevent salt buildup.
Substrate & Mounting
-
Ideal substrates: fine bark mix, sphagnum moss, or mounted on cork for good drainage and moisture retention.
-
A moss/bark mix is often recommended for improved rooting.
Fertilizer
-
During active growth, feed with diluted orchid fertilizer, flushing the media monthly to prevent salt accumulation.
