Microsaccus griffithii is a miniature orchid species native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, and the Philippines. This epiphytic orchid thrives in humid, tropical environments and is well-suited for cultivation in terrariums or vivariums.
Features:
-
Size: Microsaccus griffithii is a micro-miniature orchid, with plants reaching up to 10 cm in height.
-
Leaves: The plant features laterally flattened, distichously arranged leaves that are fleshy, ovate, and obtuse, sometimes minutely and unequally bilobed at the apex.
-
Flowers: It produces small, white, fragrant flowers approximately 3.5 mm in size. The flowers are borne on a very short, two-flowered inflorescence emerging from the axils of the leaves.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
-
Temperature: Microsaccus griffithii prefers intermediate to cool-intermediate temperatures, with a minimum of 55°F (13°C) and a maximum of 85°F (29°C).
-
Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels, ideally between 75% and 80%, to replicate its native environment.
-
Watering: Water frequently, ensuring the medium remains moist but not waterlogged. The plant does not tolerate drying out at the roots.
-
Air Circulation: Ensure good air movement to prevent fungal diseases and to mimic the natural breezes of its native habitat.
-
Potting Medium: Use a well-draining mix such as sphagnum moss, fine orchid bark, or mount on a suitable surface like cork or tree fern slabs.
