Adiantum pedatum, commonly known as the Northern Maidenhair Fern, is a deciduous perennial fern native to the forests of eastern North America. Renowned for its elegant, fan-shaped fronds and contrasting black stems, it thrives in shaded, moist environments and is a popular choice for shaded gardens and woodland settings.
Features:
- Height & Spread: Typically grows 12–30 inches (30–75 cm) tall and 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) wide.
- Fronds: Palmately divided, resembling a hand with fingers, with finely textured, somewhat frilly leaflets.
- Stems: Wiry and reddish-brown to black in color.
- Crosiers (young fiddleheads): Emerging pink in spring.
- Hardiness: Suitable for USDA zones 3–8.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers part shade to full shade. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate fronds.
- Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soils.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Prefers cooler temperatures and moderate humidity.
- Fertilization: Generally does not require fertilization. If desired, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
- Pruning: Remove dead or damaged fronds in late fall or early spring to encourage new growth.
