Paphiopedilum appletonianum is a small to medium-sized slipper orchid species native to Southeast Asia, ranging from Hainan to Indochina. It is a terrestrial or lithophytic plant that grows in shaded, humid forest environments, often among leaf litter or mossy rocks. The plant is especially valued for its attractive mottled foliage and elegant single flower, which typically displays a combination of green, pink, and reddish tones with a lightly striped dorsal sepal and a rounded pouch. The inflorescence is upright and can reach moderate height, carrying one long-lasting bloom that appears mainly from late winter to spring. Compared to many other Paphiopedilum species, it is relatively adaptable and has played a role in hybridization, contributing both foliage patterning and floral coloration.

Features:

  • Small to medium-sized plant with mottled green leaves
  • Single-flowered (rarely two) inflorescence
  • Flowers about 6–10 cm wide
  • Color combination of green, pink, and reddish tones
  • Broad dorsal sepal often light green with white margins or striping
  • Blooming season: late winter to spring (Jan–May)
  • Terrestrial or lithophytic growth habit in humid forests

Care Tips:

  • Light: Low to medium (similar to mottled-leaf Paphiopedilums)
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm (can tolerate a wide range)
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; avoid complete drying
  • Humidity: Moderate to high (50–70%+)
  • Potting: Fine, well-draining mix (bark + perlite or sphagnum blends)
  • Airflow: Gentle airflow to prevent fungal issues
  • Placement: Shaded, stable environment mimicking forest understory
