Paphiopedilum armeniacum S.C.Chen & F.Y.Liu is a highly prized golden-flowered Paphiopedilum native to western Yunnan, China, and northern Myanmar. It grows at roughly 1,600–2,000 m elevation, primarily on limestone cliffs and slopes in semi-shaded deciduous forest, often above rivers.
It is especially famous for its large sulphur-yellow to golden-yellow flowers and beautifully dark green and pale green marbled leaves, with purple-red spotting underneath. A mature plant develops elongated rhizomes and can form a spreading clump, with each growth producing 5–7 leaves. The single flowers can reach about 10.5 cm across.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, diffused light. It benefits from more light than many Paphiopedilums, but strong direct midday sun should be avoided. Kew specifically notes that increased light intensity helps encourage flowering.
- Watering: Keep the medium moist during active growth, but avoid constantly wet roots. During the winter rest period, allow the plant to become noticeably drier and use only light misting.
- Growing Medium: Use a well-draining terrestrial orchid mix with bark, sphagnum and perlite. Because the species is strongly associated with limestone, crushed limestone or dolomitic lime can be beneficial. AOS recommends maintaining a slightly alkaline medium.
- Humidity: Around 60–80% humidity is suitable, with good air movement. Kew specifically recommends cool, moist air at 60–80% relative humidity.
- Temperature: Provide intermediate to cool conditions, particularly during winter. Warm, buoyant conditions are beneficial during the main growing season, while a cooler and drier winter rest helps initiate flowering.
- Fertilizing: Feed lightly during active growth. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the winter rest period.
- Airflow: Maintain gentle, continuous airflow, especially when humidity is high.
- Potting: Because the plant develops long creeping rhizomes, give it enough horizontal space to spread. Shallow containers or baskets can work particularly well.
- Repotting: Repot carefully when new growth is beginning. Avoid burying the creeping rhizome too deeply.
- Flowering: A combination of strong filtered light, reduced winter watering and cooler winter conditions is particularly important for reliable flowering. Excessive spring watering can cause developing flowers to abort.
