Paphiopedilum barbigerum is a distinctive terrestrial Paphiopedilum native to southern China and northern Indochina, including southeastern Yunnan, southern Guizhou, Guangxi, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. It is generally found in subtropical to wet tropical habitats, often associated with limestone and rocky environments. Kew currently accepts P. barbigerum as a distinct species.

The plant forms a compact fan of 4–6 narrow, upright green leaves. It produces a single flower on an erect inflorescence, with flowers reaching approximately 6.5 cm across. The dorsal sepal is generally white with a green base, while the petals are honey-colored to ochre with lighter margins. The tan-brown pouch and yellow staminode create a warm, earthy color combination.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide moderate to bright filtered light. About 1,000–2,000 foot-candles is generally suitable for Paphiopedilums, while strong midday sun should be filtered.
  • Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings while avoiding prolonged dryness.
  • Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but well-aerated Paphiopedilum mix, such as fine or medium bark with perlite and other suitable organic material. Because P. barbigerum is associated with limestone habitats, a mildly alkaline/calcareous component can be beneficial.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity with good air circulation is suitable. If humidity is high, continuous gentle airflow is particularly important.
  • Temperature: Intermediate conditions are suitable. A general range of approximately 18–28°C (65–82°F) works well, with some cooler nighttime temperatures beneficial.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the medium periodically with clean water to prevent fertilizer-salt buildup.
  • Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous air movement, especially in humid conditions.
  • Potting: Use a relatively small pot with good drainage. Repot approximately every two years or whenever the growing medium begins to decompose.
  • Flowering: Keep light, temperature, and watering conditions stable as the flower develops. Avoid excessive drying during bud development.
