Paphiopedilum bungebelangi Metusala is a rare, compact terrestrial Paphiopedilum from Central Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia.
It grows naturally on sloping limestone hills at about 1,550–1,650 m elevation, rooted in thick leaf litter or sphagnum moss under deep, shady forest with relatively low light. The species is particularly distinctive for its heavily mottled foliage and strongly undulating yellowish-green petals with bold dark-green longitudinal stripes.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide low to moderate filtered light. Avoid strong direct sunlight. This species naturally grows under deep forest shade.
- Watering: Keep the medium evenly moist, particularly during active growth, but provide excellent drainage.
- Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but airy Paphiopedilum mix with fine bark, sphagnum and perlite. A slightly mineral-rich or limestone-containing mix can be suitable.
- Humidity: Maintain 60–80% humidity with good air circulation.
- Temperature: Intermediate to cool conditions are preferable. Approximately 18–25°C (64–77°F) during the day with cooler nights is a suitable starting range.
- Fertilizing: Apply a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the medium periodically to prevent fertilizer-salt buildup.
- Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous airflow, especially when humidity is high.
- Potting: Use a relatively small pot with good drainage. Avoid allowing the medium to remain stagnant and waterlogged.
- Repotting: Repot when the medium begins to break down or when new roots are developing. Minimize disturbance to the root system.
- Flowering: Stable moisture, cool-to-intermediate temperatures and relatively low light are appropriate for developing healthy growth and flowering.
