Paphiopedilum Chou-Yi Rookie is a modern primary hybrid registered in 2018, created by crossing Paphiopedilum thaianum with Paphiopedilum rothschildianum. This cross is especially interesting because it combines two very different groups within the genus: the miniature Brachypetalum-type thaianum and the large, multifloral rothschildianum. The result is a compact to small plant that can still produce relatively large, showy flowers with striped patterns in white, green, and reddish tones. The blooms often resemble a miniature version of classic rothschildianum-type hybrids, with improved manageability in size and potentially faster growth. Some forms may also show slight fragrance, and overall the hybrid represents a modern breeding direction aimed at creating compact multifloral Paphiopedilums with strong visual impact.

Features:

  • Primary hybrid: 50% thaianum × 50% rothschildianum
  • Compact to miniature plant size (influenced by thaianum)
  • Flowers resemble miniature rothschildianum-type blooms
  • White to green base color with red or pink striping/veining
  • Potential for multifloral or sequential-like flowering influence
  • Long-lasting blooms with refined shape
  • Modern hybrid (registered 2018)

Care Tips:

  • Light: Moderate to bright indirect light (slightly higher than mottled-leaf types)
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm; tolerates warmer conditions well
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist but never soggy; good drainage is essential
  • Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80%)
  • Potting: Very open, airy mix (fine bark + perlite; avoid compaction)
  • Airflow: Strong airflow helps prevent root and crown issues
  • Feeding: Light, regular fertilization; flush media periodically to avoid salt buildup
  • Growth note: Easier and more compact than rothschildianum, making it more suitable for indoor growers
