Paphiopedilum concolor is a compact Brachypetalum-section Paphiopedilum native from southern China through mainland Southeast Asia, including Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
The plant forms compact fans of 4–6 tessellated leaves, with dark and pale green markings and often purple spotting on the underside. The flowers are relatively large for the plant, about 5.5–7 cm across, and are typically yellow to yellow-green, densely marked with purple spots. The thick, fleshy pouch gives the flowers a particularly rounded appearance.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide medium, filtered light. Avoid strong midday sunlight. Paphiopedilums generally do well with about 1,000–2,000 foot-candles of light.
- Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently lightly moist, but never continuously saturated. Water when the medium begins to dry and allow excess water to drain freely.
- Growing Medium: Use a moisture-retentive but well-aerated Paphiopedilum mix, such as fine or medium bark, perlite, and suitable organic material. Because P. concolor is associated with limestone habitats, a mildly calcareous component can be beneficial.
- Humidity: Moderate humidity with good airflow is suitable. Avoid stagnant, constantly wet conditions around the crown.
- Temperature: Intermediate to warm conditions are appropriate. Aim for approximately 18–29°C (65–85°F) during the day with somewhat cooler nights. AOS notes that mottled-leaved Paphiopedilums generally prefer warmer conditions than plain-green types.
- Fertilizing: Feed regularly with a diluted balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth. Flush the pot periodically with clean water to prevent salt buildup.
- Airflow: Provide gentle, continuous air movement, especially in humid conditions.
- Potting: Use a relatively small pot with good drainage. Repot when the medium begins to decompose, generally every 1–2 years.
- Flowering: Keep watering, temperature, and light relatively stable while buds are developing. Avoid letting the plant become severely dry.
